Tripoli: Following a session of the High Council of State, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has confirmed that the voting process occurred under normal and transparent conditions. The session, which involved the election of a new Presidency Bureau, was broadcast live and saw the participation of 95 members.
According to Libyan News Agency, UNSMIL congratulated the newly elected Presidency of the State Council and expressed hope for a constructive engagement from all Council members. This engagement is deemed crucial to breaking the ongoing political deadlock and advancing the political process in Libya. The Mission emphasized the importance of ending the protracted transitional phases that have been affecting the country.
The statement highlighted that the attendance of two-thirds of the Council members at the session signifies a broad consensus among members to overcome the division that has hindered the Council’s effectiveness over the past year. UNSMIL supports calls to expand this co
nsensus by including members who were not present at the session.
UNSMIL expects the High Council of State to fulfill its duties as outlined in the Libyan Political Agreement and to align with the aspirations of Libyans to end the institutional divide. The Mission encourages the Council to restore legitimacy through elections and contribute to necessary reforms. It further urges Council members to undertake their national duties and meet the expectations of the Libyan people by supporting a Libyan-led political process, facilitated by UNSMIL.
