Baku:The UN Special Representative, Hanna Tetteh, has announced plans to meet with members of the "4+4" committee this month to discuss advancing a broadly representative national mechanism for Libya. This initiative aligns with consultations with the Security Council and adheres to Article 5 of the agreement.
According to Libyan News Agency, Tetteh briefed the UN Security Council on Libya's situation, noting the Government of National Unity, the General Command, the House of Representatives, and Presidential Council member Moussa Al-Koni have expressed support for the "4+4" agreement. This support highlights the Libyan parties' commitment to moving toward elections under a unified legislative and executive authority. Tetteh emphasized that while this "mini-dialogue" is crucial, it is not the sole mechanism the UN mission will use to advance the roadmap. She also stressed the importance of international and regional support for political progress in Libya.
Tetteh expressed anticipation of collaborating with the new House of Representatives leadership, under Al-Salihin Abdul-Nabi, to strengthen the political roadmap and implement the "4+4" agreement. However, she noted that the High Council of State rejected the agreement, citing its deviation from national legal frameworks. Some council members have requested more time from the UN mission to consult further on the political process.
Highlighting the urgency of the situation, Tetteh warned against allowing spoilers to hinder the political process and mentioned she would outline her next steps in a forthcoming briefing. The upcoming meeting will also explore options for proceeding with a broad-based national representation mechanism, as detailed in Article 5 of the agreement, in consultation with the Security Council.
