Tripoli: The United Nations and the League of Arab States have initiated discussions aimed at supporting development and enhancing economic governance in Libya. Georgette Gagnon, the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and UN Resident Coordinator in Libya, held a meeting with Sheikh Al-Mukhtar Mahmoud, the League of Arab States Ambassador to Libya, to explore collaborative efforts towards Libya's development goals.
According to Libyan News Agency, the discussions centered on economic governance, the fortification of national institutions, and fostering inclusive economic growth throughout Libya. The dialogue also touched upon learning from the experiences of neighboring Arab nations in combating illicit economies, human trafficking, and smuggling, which are critical for maintaining Libya's territorial integrity and achieving sustainable development.
In response to recent incidents targeting UN premises, the talks also addressed migration challenges in Libya and the UN's role in supporting national authorities to tackle these issues. Gagnon emphasized that the United Nations is not involved in the resettlement of migrants or foreign nationals in Libya, as per the same source.
She further affirmed the UN's dedication to ongoing collaboration with regional and international entities, including the League of Arab States, to bolster peace, stability, and effective governance in Libya.
