UN and African Union Reaffirm Commitment to Libya’s Peace and Reconciliation Efforts

New york: The United Nations and the African Union have jointly expressed their support for Libya’s ongoing peace and reconciliation efforts. In a joint statement concluding the 9th Annual Conference of the African Union and the United Nations at the UN headquarters in New York, both organizations reiterated their commitment to supporting Libya’s journey toward peace and stability, highlighting the progress made in national reconciliation and political processes.

According to Libyan News Agency, the conference, held at the invitation of UN Secretary-General António Guterres and African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, focused on addressing peace and security challenges at both regional and international levels, with a particular emphasis on developments in Libya. The statement praised the African Union’s continuous efforts to foster national reconciliation among Libyan communities, underscoring the importance of broad community participation in creating a conducive environment for the polit
ical process.

The conference reaffirmed the UN’s support for a roadmap designed to establish the conditions necessary for holding national elections, which are seen as crucial for ending the transitional phase and restoring political stability in Libya. The signing of the ‘Libyan National Peace and Reconciliation Charter’ by various political and military parties was welcomed as a significant move towards strengthening stability in the region.

Both the UN and the African Union emphasized the importance of enhanced coordination among international partners, particularly through the International Follow-Up Committee on Libya, to aid Libyans in reconstructing a credible political process that can lead to national elections. The joint statement concluded by stressing that the success of Libya’s peace process hinges on close cooperation between national institutions and regional and international partners, along with sustained support for dialogue and reconciliation to ensure lasting peace and sustainable develo
pment in the country.
