Tripoli: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has emphasized that a unified Libya would significantly contribute to the African continent, the Islamic world, and the region. He stated that the unity of Libya is crucial not only for resolving its internal issues but also for its broader impact on the region.
According to Libyan News Agency, Fidan made these remarks to journalists following discussions in Tripoli and Benghazi during his visit to Libya. He expressed optimism about the ongoing negotiations to unify eastern and western Libya and reaffirmed Turkey's commitment to continue its mediating role in the process.
Fidan highlighted Turkey's strong strategic, security, military, political, and trade relations with both sides in Libya. He noted that Libya has experienced a turbulent period since the revolution began 15 years ago, but the situation has calmed since 2019, largely due to Turkey's foreign policy under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
He pointed out that Turkish construction companies are undertaking major projects in Tripoli and Benghazi, symbolizing the growing cooperation between the two nations. During his visit to Tripoli, Fidan met with key officials, including the head of the Government of National Accord, Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, and the head of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohammed al-Manfi.
The Turkish Foreign Minister also visited Benghazi, where he engaged with significant figures such as the commander of the Libyan National Army, Khalifa Haftar, and other influential leaders. Fidan remarked that leaders from both the east and west of Libya recognize the potential benefits of a unified country.
Fidan stressed the importance of Turkey's balanced relations with both sides in Libya, which have garnered respect and facilitated progress in their bilateral relations. He encouraged more Turkish companies to invest in Libya, citing the nation's energy resources, labor advantages, and market access.
Concluding his statements, Fidan underscored Turkey's intention to use its positive relationships with Libya's east and west to help establish a unified, sovereign, and independent Libya.
