Tripoli: The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya (SRSG), Hannah Tetteh, has called on the Presidential Council to expedite the establishment of a mechanism aimed at bolstering the security sector in western Libya.
According to Libyan News Agency, Tetteh conveyed this message during her regular briefing to the UN Security Council. She highlighted that tensions in western Libya, particularly in Tripoli, have decreased due to local and international mediation efforts, notably the intervention by the Turkish government.
Tetteh pointed out that these mediation efforts, supported by the Turkish government, have led to the implementation of agreements among the concerned parties. This includes the withdrawal of the Deterrence Force from Mitiga Airport and the withdrawal of Government of National Accord forces from the capital. She welcomed the progress made, as well as the new appointments in security agencies and the transfer of detainees to the Office of the Public Prosecutor.
She further noted that maintaining a stable security environment is crucial for political advancement. Tetteh mentioned that UNSMIL is collaborating with the Presidential Council to develop a mechanism to reform the security sector in western Libya, aiming to uphold the truce and achieve sustainable security in the region.
