Tripoli: The Security Council has expressed its approval of the agreement reached during the "mini-meeting" facilitated by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). The agreement, signed on August 30, aims to reconstitute the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) board and amend the electoral framework, with the goal of conducting presidential and legislative elections within two years.
According to Libyan News Agency, the UN Security Council members reiterated their full support for UNSMIL and the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Hanna Tetteh. They also backed the political roadmap announced by the Mission on August 21, 2025. In a press statement released by the UN Mission, Council members praised the Libyan parties for their positive engagement and emphasized the necessity for all relevant Libyan parties to support the agreement. They urged these parties to actively participate in the Special Representative's efforts, including advancing the political roadmap, and affirmed their support for continued engagement by UNSMIL and the Special Representative in an inclusive political process.
Furthermore, the Council members advocated for additional steps to enhance the implementation of the unified spending framework announced on April 11, 2026. They emphasized the importance of unifying all institutions, including military and security bodies, as well as the unified executive authority.
The Security Council reaffirmed its strong commitment to the UN's central role in facilitating an inclusive, Libyan-led political process, supported by the international community. The members also reiterated their respect for Libya's sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and national unity, emphasizing the need to avoid external interference. According to the UN Mission, this agreement marks a significant step toward holding free, fair, transparent, and inclusive national elections and fostering the unification of Libyan institutions to fulfill the aspirations of the Libyan people.
