Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani chaired a meeting focused on improving the electricity sector by reducing losses, maximizing resources, and enhancing collection efforts. The meeting included officials from the Ministry of Electricity and advisors from the Prime Minister’s Office.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Prime Minister’s media office issued a statement highlighting the key points discussed during the meeting. The Prime Minister stressed the need for a clear and effective strategy to maximize revenue from collection. He also called for a review of loss schedules from 2023 to the first half of 2025 to identify shortcomings and evaluate the capabilities of companies interested in implementing the collection process.
The statement also noted the meeting’s approval to procure high-spec, locally produced smart meters from the Ministry of Industry. These meters will help determine load ceilings and set standards for main feeders, as well as be installed in high-consumption institutions to support electronic payment systems in collection.
Furthermore, the continuation and strengthening of contracts with collection companies was approved, along with cooperation with financially capable companies. Emphasis was placed on prioritizing collection efforts within the Ministry of Electricity and ensuring accountability and monitoring of low collection rates in the governorates, aligning them with energy consumption.
