TRIPOLI: The Forum of Notables and Sheikhs convened in Tripoli on Wednesday, issuing a call to international organizations including the United Nations Mission in Libya, the UN Security Council, and the African Union to stand by the Presidential Council in its efforts to achieve national reconciliation in Libya. This appeal was part of a closing statement from the forum, which was held under the auspices of the Presidential Council and attended by Abdullah Al-Lafi, the Council’s representative, alongside a significant number of notables, sheikhs, elders, civil society institutions, and members of the Libyan General Union of Organizations and Associations of Martyrs’ Families.

According to Libyan News Agency, the forum urged the Presidential Council to invigorate the role of the National Reconciliation Commission by supporting it and appointing its members. The forum’s statement highlighted that issues such as national reconciliation, election supervision, and the position of the Supreme Commander of the Libyan Army fall under the jurisdiction of the Presidential Council, as was established at the Geneva Conference in 2021. The statement emphasized that national reconciliation should be viewed as a political reconciliation aimed at unifying the leadership and administration of the state.

Furthermore, the forum stressed the importance of adhering to Transitional Justice Law No. 29 of 2013, enacted by the General National Congress, to ensure its implementation for achieving social peace. This legal framework is seen as pivotal in facilitating national reconciliation efforts, which are crucial for Libya’s path towards stability and unity.
