Tripoli: The Ministry of Education has announced a new directive mandating the separation of male and female students in private secondary education. This decision, outlined in Circular No. (1) of 2026, focuses on preserving religious and national values within educational institutions.
According to Libyan News Agency, the Ministry emphasized the importance of unifying educational standards and maintaining the identity of Libyan students, particularly in private and international educational settings. The directive requires complete segregation of male and female students in classrooms, rest areas, courtyards, and playgrounds. This move aligns private institutions with practices already in place in public schools.
The circular further prohibits mixed-gender activities or events unless prior written approval is obtained from the Private Education Department. This approval is contingent upon the activity's compliance with the new regulations. Additionally, the directive instructs all educational institutions to manage their social media platforms to support their educational objectives.
The Ministry has tasked the Director of Private Education and education supervisors with monitoring compliance through regular and surprise visits. Institutions found in violation risk having their licenses revoked and being shut down, with legal consequences for those responsible.
