Baghdad: Minister of Justice Khaled Shawani announced today the formation of a supreme committee to regulate the extradition of female foreign inmates not sentenced to death to their home countries.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Minister Shawani discussed with ambassadors and representatives of Arab and foreign diplomatic missions in Iraq the mechanisms for resolving this humanitarian and legal issue, which is of significant interest to the Iraqi government.
During the meeting, emphasis was placed on strengthening coordination and cooperation with the concerned countries to expedite the resolution of pending cases in accordance with standards of justice and equal treatment. Shawani emphasized that Iraq is handling this matter based on its international obligations and the principles of justice and humanity, as well as the principle of reciprocity in implementing bilateral and multilateral agreements.
He further noted that the Supreme Ministerial Council for National Security has established a higher committee, chaired by him and including the Supreme Judicial Council, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the National Security Advisor, to develop precise mechanisms for handing over female prisoners not condemned to death to their home countries. This process will be in accordance with agreements and memoranda of understanding and the principle of reciprocity.
The committee also places special importance on the humanitarian aspect, ensuring that the issue of children accompanying their foreign mothers is addressed in compliance with international human rights agreements.
