Libyan Ministry of Defense Engages with UN Delegation to Strengthen Humanitarian Law

Tripoli: The Ministry of Defense of the Government of National Unity engaged in discussions with a delegation from the United Nations to enhance cooperation in strengthening the rules of international humanitarian law. The meeting, held at the Ministry’s headquarters, focused on promoting human rights and implementing protection measures to prevent the recruitment or use of children in military operations.

According to Libyan News Agency, the Director of the Office of the Minister of Defense met with the UN delegation, which included representatives from the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNICEF) and the Security Institutions Services Division of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). The session emphasized Libya’s commitment to international treaties and conventions ratified by the Libyan state.

UNICEF Representative Mohammed Fayazi acknowledged the Ministry of Defense’s cooperation and the steps taken to uphold international humanitarian laws. Badr al-Din al-Harthi, Head of the Security Institutions Services Division at the United Nations Mission in Libya, praised the Ministry’s efforts in security and military areas, highlighting the initiatives undertaken to develop humanitarian personnel and the establishment of a unified code of conduct.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to intensify joint cooperation to promote peace and establish stability.
