Tripoli: The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) announced that the Presidential Council, acting as the Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan Armed Forces, has formed a truce committee in collaboration with the Mission. The committee is headed by the Chief of Staff of the Libyan Army, Lieutenant General Mohamed Al-Haddad. This development follows the fragile ceasefire reached last week.

According to Libyan News Agency, the committee convened its first meeting today, focusing on establishing a permanent ceasefire. Its primary goals include protecting civilians and agreeing on security arrangements for the capital, Tripoli.

The Mission highlighted that the formation of the committee under Lieutenant General Al-Haddad underscores a commitment by all parties to prevent further escalation. It also ensures adherence to international human rights law and international humanitarian law.

UNSMIL expressed appreciation for the Presidential Council’s leadership in this critical issue, noting its dedication to reducing tensions and fostering peace. The Mission acknowledged the ongoing efforts of political, military, and social actors in negotiating and upholding the truce.

Additionally, the Mission referred to UN Security Council concerns about civilian casualties from last week’s violence, urging for an immediate and lasting ceasefire. It called for accountability for those responsible for violations of the truce and international laws.

The statement concluded by reaffirming UNSMIL’s unwavering commitment to advancing peace, stability, security, and human rights for all Libyans in Tripoli and across the country.
