United Nations:Libya's President of the Presidential Council, Mohamed Al-Menfi, has stated that the country no longer requires crisis management but instead needs the will to resolve its ongoing issues. He emphasized that the foundation for building the Libyan state begins with returning power to the people through elections, referendums, and constitutional mechanisms.
According to Libyan News Agency, Al-Menfi delivered a speech at the United Nations where he asserted that the Libyan people's will is the source of legitimacy. He criticized temporary agreements and fragile settlements, saying they cannot replace the people's will. Al-Menfi expressed Libya's desire for a self-balanced state rather than a battleground for external interests.
Al-Menfi announced the formation of a National Committee for De-escalation and Confidence-Building aimed at addressing conflicts, promoting reconciliation, and creating a secure environment for political and electoral processes. He stressed the importance of national ownership, warning against international mediation evolving into external control over Libya.
He also highlighted the necessity for Libya's sovereignty to ensure that national decisions are independent, institutions are stronger than individuals or groups, and that the nation's wealth serves the people. Al-Menfi insisted on the rule of law and warned against the threats posed by corruption and illicit influence within the state's institutions.
Al-Menfi urged the UN Security Council to address violations and non-compliance issues detailed in the Panel of Experts' reports, advocating for action without bias. He stated Libya seeks partnerships around investment and development rather than influence within its institutions.
On a regional note, Al-Menfi reiterated Libya's integral role in African security, particularly in the Sahel, and emphasized the Mediterranean Sea as a conduit for development and cooperation between Africa and Europe. He expressed Libya's solidarity with Saudi Arabia in safeguarding regional stability and announced Libya's candidacy for a United Nations Security Council seat for the 2028-2029 term.
Al-Menfi reaffirmed Libya's commitment to the Palestinian cause and cautioned that undermining peace prospects could escalate conflict and extremism in the region.
