Tripoli: Libyan-European talks are underway to enhance cooperation in heritage protection and local development. EU Ambassador to Libya, Nicola Orlando, has confirmed the EU’s dedication to aiding Libya in preserving and promoting its rich cultural and historical heritage, which holds significant economic potential.
According to Libyan News Agency, this announcement followed Orlando’s visit to Leptis Magna, where he assessed the progress of the EU-funded “Heritage” program. The program, implemented by Italy’s Agency for Development Cooperation, supports the creation of Libya’s first restoration school. During his visit, Orlando engaged with Khoms Mayor Ali Al Deeb to explore opportunities for strengthening collaboration in heritage protection and local development. Both parties agreed to continue their partnership to encourage sustainable growth at the local level.
In related developments, Al-Khums Municipality participated in a celebration organized by the UNESCO Regional Office for the Maghreb. The event
marked the reopening of UNESCO’s headquarters in Tripoli and took place at the archaeological site of Leptis Magna. Themed “Celebrating Education, Culture, and Science,” the event saw participation from various diplomatic missions and international organizations.
The official page of Al-Khums Municipality indicated that the mayor hosted a delegation from the EU mission, emphasizing the significance of Leptis Magna as a major historical site that draws visitors globally due to its cultural heritage and strategic location.
