Tripoli: The committee concerned with monitoring the conditions of Libyans imprisoned abroad has proposed the establishment of a specialized body dedicated to overseeing the circumstances of these prisoners. This initiative was discussed during the first meeting of the committee, which was formed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives to address the legal and humanitarian aspects of cases involving Libyan citizens detained outside the country.
According to Libyan News Agency, the committee, which includes House of Representatives members Saleh Abdulnabi, Ahmed Al-Sharif, and Ms. Al-Yaqubi, along with legal advisor Ashraf Al-Dous, met with Ibrahim Bushnaf, who leads the government-appointed committee responsible for monitoring prisoners and detainees within Libya. The meeting focused on coordinating efforts between the two committees to address related cases effectively.
Discussions also covered the state of domestic prisons, challenges facing correctional institutions, and the implementation of court rulings against detainees. This was conducted in collaboration with the Deputy Commander-in-Chief, aiming to uphold the rule of law and improve prison conditions.
Updated statistics revealed that 298 cases of Libyan citizens imprisoned abroad are under review. Among these, 113 have been released, and verdicts have been issued in 128 cases. Additionally, there are two cases involving deportation or withdrawal, with 47 prisoners released and 18 citizens deported. The committee emphasized ongoing efforts to process and follow up on unresolved cases.
The committee highlighted the need for enhanced communication with Libyan embassies abroad and stressed the importance of regularly updating the Attorney General and the Speaker of the House of Representatives on case developments to expedite resolutions and safeguard the rights of Libyan citizens overseas.
Concluding the meeting, the committee agreed to submit a proposal to the House of Representatives for establishing a specialized body to monitor the conditions of prisoners. This body would aim to unify efforts and enhance oversight of legal and humanitarian issues related to Libyan citizens imprisoned abroad.
