Libya to Chair OAPEC Council of Ministers in 2026

Kuwait city: Libya will assume the presidency of the Council of Ministers of the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) starting in January 2026. Acting Minister of Oil and Gas, Khalifa Abdul-Sadiq, attended the 115th meeting of the OAPEC Council of Ministers held in Kuwait, alongside ministers from member states.

According to Libyan News Agency, the meeting focused on ongoing efforts to develop and restructure OAPEC, unveiling its new identity as the "Arab Energy Organization." This rebranding aims to strengthen the organization's regional influence and adapt to global changes in the energy sector.

During the meeting, the Council announced the recipients of the 2024 OAPEC Scientific Research Award, recognizing achievements in new and renewable energy. Additionally, the Council extended congratulations to Libya for its upcoming leadership role in the OAPEC Council of Ministers and the Executive Bureau, set to begin on January 1, 2026.

The Council also confirmed the appointment of Khalid Al-Otaibi as the Secretary General of the organization. His three-year term will commence in March 2026, marking another significant leadership change within OAPEC.
