Orlando: Libya is a key partner in the EU's efforts in the Mediterranean: The Head of the European Union Delegation to Libya, Nicola Orlando, affirmed that Libya is a key partner in the EU's efforts to promote effective and human rights-based management of the Mediterranean.

According to Libyan News Agency, this statement was made in a tweet by Nicola Orlando following his meeting with Major General Reda Issa, the Head of the Libyan Coast Guard, in Tripoli on Tuesday. Orlando highlighted the importance of the existing partnership between the EU and Libya, emphasizing the EU's commitment to bolstering the capabilities of the Libyan Coast Guard, with a focus on search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean.

The discussions during the meeting also explored avenues for further cooperation, particularly through enhanced training programs and strengthened international maritime collaboration. Emphasis was placed on integrating human rights standards into various operational areas, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

Orlando noted that this meeting is part of the ongoing coordination efforts between the EU and Libya, aimed at supporting joint cooperation and boosting institutional capacities in maritime sectors. This initiative underscores the strategic importance of Libya in the EU's Mediterranean agenda, as per the European official's tweet.
