Algiers: The Minister of Social Affairs in the Government of National Unity, Wafaa Al-Kilani, has taken over the chairmanship of the Social Development Committee of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). This transition occurred during the opening of the committee’s 16th session held in the Algerian capital, with Libya succeeding the Lebanese Republic.
According to Libyan News Agency, the official ceremony marking Libya’s assumption of the chairmanship was attended by ministers of social affairs and heads of delegations from various Arab member states, as well as ESCWA officials. The event focused on strengthening social protection mechanisms and facilitating the exchange of experiences among Arab countries.
In her address, Al-Kilani expressed Libya’s commitment to supporting social development programs and enhancing protection and care networks for vulnerable groups. She highlighted the importance of regional coordination in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and advancing equality and social justice.
The ministry disclosed that the session reviewed the experiences of Arab countries in social protection, with special acknowledgment from the Algerian minister regarding her country’s efforts in this area. The session, taking place at the Abdellatif Rahal International Conference Center, is scheduled to continue until June 25. Discussions will revolve around challenges facing social protection systems in the Arab region and the need for reforms to ensure universal coverage and improve efficiency, contributing to stability and sustainable development.
