Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdullahian said that Iran and Russia made possible a diplomatic settlement of the Syrian issue.

This came upon Abdullahian’s arrival in Moscow to attend the quadrilateral meeting of the foreign ministers of Iran, Russia, Syria and Turkey, where he expressed his hope that the talks in Moscow would provide the preconditions for the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland and the withdrawal of US forces from Syria.

The Iranian Foreign Minister continued in statements to “Tasnim” news agency: “The diplomatic efforts of Tehran and Moscow to prevent military clashes on the Syrian-Turkish border made it possible to start the negotiation process, and in a meeting within the Astana format in Tehran last year, the participants stressed the need to reach a political settlement in the contradictions between Turkey and Syria.

The process of normalizing relations between Ankara and Damascus began last December 28 in the Russian capital, Moscow, when consultations were held between the Defense Ministers of Russia, Syria and Turkey, and during the meeting it was agreed to form a joint tripartite committee, and after these consultations a meeting was planned at the level of Foreign Ministers to prepare for negotiations between the presidents of Turkey and Syria: Erdogan and Assad. Later it was reported that Iran will participate in the consultations at the level of foreign ministers.

On May 3, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu announced that the quadrilateral meeting of the foreign ministers of Iran, Russia, Syria and Turkey could be held on May 10 in Moscow.
