Tripoli: The High National Elections Commission (HNEC) has announced its readiness to conduct presidential and parliamentary elections in mid-April 2026. The Commission’s preparedness is contingent upon securing necessary funding, ensuring security, and reaching an agreement on the mechanisms to support and oversee the process under the two governing bodies.
According to Libyan News Agency, the Commission issued a statement highlighting its role as outlined in the Constitutional Declaration, emphasizing its responsibility to oversee all aspects of the electoral process. The Commission operates within the framework of state sovereignty, adhering to the laws and decisions issued by state institutions.
The Council reiterated the Commission’s independence and impartiality, qualities that have earned it the trust of citizens and politicians across the political spectrum. The electoral options and practices offered by the Commission enable citizens to exercise their right to choose representatives in power.
In its statement, the Council called on the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to focus on resolving disputes related to the amendment of electoral laws issued by the (6+6) Committee. The Council urged prompt resolution and referral of these disputes to the Commission, allowing for the issuance of necessary regulations and procedures. Additionally, the Council advised UNSMIL against engaging in activities that perpetuate the stagnation affecting the state’s structure and called for addressing the root causes of the electoral challenges.
