High Elections Committee Explores Measures to Shield Women from Election Violence

Tripoli: The High Elections Committee is actively exploring ways to enhance the protection of women from violence during election periods. An expanded meeting was convened at the headquarters of the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) to address this critical issue.

According to Libyan News Agency, the meeting was chaired by HNEC Board Member Rabab Halab and included key figures such as Aisha Thaboot, Head of the Awareness Department; Najwa Abu Bakr, Head of the Women’s Support Unit; Salina Joshi and Khadija Al-Bouaishi from the United Nations Electoral Support Mission in Libya (UNEM); and Maram Al-Akrout, Programme Officer at UN Women. The discussions focused on developing a comprehensive code of conduct for candidates that supports women’s empowerment and ensures their active participation in elections.

The participants emphasized the need to create a safe and equitable electoral environment for all candidates, aligning with international standards of inclusiveness and fairness. Discussions also covered the timeline for designing and implementing the code, as well as strategies for ensuring compliance once it is adopted.
