Tripoli: The Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dabaiba, has initiated efforts to enhance the oversight of correctional facilities in Libya by forming a committee to take control of the Mitiga and Ain Zara prisons. This move comes under Decision No. (399) of 2025, with the aim of improving the administration and monitoring of these institutions.
According to Libyan News Agency, the committee will be chaired by the Head of the Inspection Department for Judicial Bodies and Correctional and Rehabilitation Institutions at the Office of the Attorney General. Additional members include a representative from the Ministry of Justice and another from the Judicial Police. The committee’s primary responsibilities include taking over the management of these prisons, conducting a comprehensive count of the inmates, and classifying them based on the cases against them.
The committee is also tasked with ensuring that the institutions comply with legal standards, particularly concerning individuals wanted by the Office of the Attorney General. This initiative reflects a focused effort to streamline operations and uphold judicial processes within the correctional system in Libya.
