Tripoli: Britain, Canada, and Australia announced on Sunday their official recognition of the State of Palestine, a move described as part of coordinated international efforts to revive the peace process and achieve a two-state solution.
According to Libyan News Agency, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated via the X platform that the recognition aims to revive hope for peace between Palestinians and Israelis, aligning Britain with more than 150 countries that have already recognized the State of Palestine. Starmer emphasized Britain’s commitment to maintaining the viability of a two-state solution and expressed plans to impose new sanctions on figures within the Hamas movement, asserting that Hamas should not have a role in Palestine’s future governance or security framework.
In a parallel development, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney declared Canada’s recognition of Palestine, criticizing Israel’s systematic actions that hinder the establishment of a Palestinian state. Carney highlighted that Canada’s decision reflects a broader international effort to support a two-state solution.
Australia also confirmed its recognition of Palestine, emphasizing that this step is part of global efforts to achieve lasting peace. The Australian government noted that the establishment of diplomatic relations and the opening of embassies with Palestine would be contingent upon the Palestinian Authority’s commitment to implementing necessary internal reforms. Furthermore, Australia mentioned a comprehensive international plan aimed at rebuilding the Gaza Strip and establishing Palestinian state institutions while ensuring Israel’s security.
Nine countries, including France, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta, Andorra, San Marino, and Portugal, have officially declared their intention to recognize the State of Palestine ahead of the UN General Assembly meetings in New York.
