Benghazi: An agreement was signed in Benghazi between the National Center for Disability Research and the National Council for Civil Liberties and Human Rights aimed at supporting and promoting the rights of persons with disabilities and their integration into society, in line with international standards.
According to Libyan News Agency, Counselor and official spokesperson for the Council, Idris Al-Ghazali, stated that the agreement embodies a strategic vision that places persons with disabilities among public policy priorities. He highlighted that the percentage of persons with disabilities ranges between 12 and 16 percent of Libya’s population. Al-Ghazali explained that community awareness is a key provision of the agreement, as it is essential for breaking stereotypes about disability and promoting integration as an active part of the social fabric. He also noted that a specialized committee is working to develop Law No. (5) on the rights of persons with disabilities.
Aya Salem Al-Aqouri, Director of the International Cooperation Office at the National Center for Disability Research, explained that the memorandum of understanding falls within the center’s mandate to support scientific cooperation with both national and international institutions. She emphasized that areas of cooperation include conducting joint research, organizing scientific seminars and conferences, and exchanging expertise in training and reform. These efforts aim to contribute to the development of a unified and comprehensive national vision for the rights of persons with disabilities.
