Tripoli: The Council of the League of Arab States has officially endorsed a Libyan proposal to implement a rotational system for the chairmanship of its standing committees. This decision was made during the 166th ordinary session of the Council at the ministerial level, which took place from September 5 to 7, 2026, with a Libyan delegation led by Taher Al-Baour, who oversees the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
According to Libyan News Agency, the Council also made several other significant decisions, including the appointment of Libyan candidates to various positions within the League. Tamim Baiou has been appointed as the head of one of the Arab League's overseas offices, while Adnan Muftah Al-Kish has been appointed as a judge at the Arab Administrative Court for a three-year tenure.
In addition to these appointments, the Council expressed support for several Libyan candidates seeking international positions under the agenda item concerning "Arab nominations for posts within the United Nations, its specialized agencies, and other international organizations." Notable endorsements include Hatem Mohamed Khelif for the UN Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families (2028-2031); Majdi Al-Sharef Al-Shabani for the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2029-2032); and Ali Ayad Karir for the role of Chair of the International Civil Service Commission (2027-2030).
Moreover, the Council approved Libya's proposal to amend Paragraph (1) of Article 5 of the Rules of Procedure for Permanent Technical Committees. This amendment will introduce a system of rotation for the chairmanship of the Arab League's permanent committees, ensuring that Libya will have the opportunity to lead these committees on a periodic and equitable basis.
