ARAB FMS URGE EMPOWERING LIBYA’S GOV’T OF NATIONAL ACCORD

CAIRO, March 12 -- The Arab League Council on Friday called on the international community to support the Libyan Government of National Accord in order to enable it address the security threats.

The 145th session of the Council, held at the foreign-minister level, renewed support to Libya's new government in its efforts to combat the growing presence of the Daesh.

The Council strongly denounced the terrorist acts being committed by the IS against innocent civilians across Libya.

It called on the international community to offer all possible political and material support to the new government once it won the confidence of the Tripoli-based General National Congress and the Tobruk-based House of Representatives.

The Council highlighted the significance of Libya's neighbors in advancing the political process in the country, welcoming Tunisia's call for hosting a meeting of Libya's neighbors on March 21-22.

The Council asked the League's Secretary-General to maintain consultation with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Martin Kobler as well as Libya's neighbors in order to facilitate the implementation of the UN-brokered deal to form unity government.

The agreement was reached by the Libyan factions in in the Moroccan coastal town of Skhirat, in mid-December, 2015, after one year of marathon talks and four years after Muammar Gaddafi's fall.
