Algiers: First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Fawzi al-Nuwairi, underscored the crucial legislative role the Libyan House of Representatives plays in supporting the Palestinian cause. He delivered a speech on behalf of the Libyan delegation during the 38th Conference of the Arab Parliamentary Union in Algiers.
According to Libyan News Agency, al-Nuwairi stated that the Arab nation is navigating a critical juncture amid rapid regional and international changes. These challenges impose a historic responsibility on Arab parliamentarians to intensify collaborative efforts to serve their peoples’ aspirations for stability and development. He highlighted the region’s complex crises, emphasizing the necessity of a unified Arab stance to counter foreign interventions that threaten regional security and stability.
Al-Nuwairi articulated that the Arab Parliamentary Union serves as a collective platform that can effectively express the will of Arab peoples and support their causes, particularly the Palestinian cause. He asserted that this issue is a matter of identity, dignity, and existence, challenging the sincerity of national and religious commitments. He criticized the aggression and violations faced by Palestinians as threats to international legitimacy and Arab security.
He called for the conference to initiate a unified Arab strategy supporting Palestinian rights, including the establishment of an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital. Al-Nuwairi urged for increased Arab parliamentary coordination and international presence to criminalize dealings with the Zionist entity and bolster Palestinian resilience.
In this context, al-Nuwairi noted the Libyan House of Representatives’ significant legislative step with Law No. (33) of 2023. This law amends previous legislation to criminalize dealings with the Zionist entity and prohibits its entry into state lands and facilities.
Concluding his speech, al-Nuwairi urged Arab parliamentarians to meet the challenges head-on, revitalizing the Arab Parliamentary Union’s role in defending national issues. He called for a comprehensive review of Arab positions to formulate a collective parliamentary action plan to support Palestine and reclaim rightful ownership of its lands.
The delegation from the Libyan House of Representatives, led by al-Nuwairi, included members Al-Salihin Abdul Nabi, Hassan al-Barghouthi, Aisha Shalabi, and House office head Abdullah al-Masry.
