Tripoli: President of the Presidential Council, Mohammed Al-Menfi, met today with the Chairman of the Constitutional Drafting Assembly, Maraj Ali Nouh, following his election by the Assembly’s members as its chairman. During the meeting, held at the Council’s headquarters in the capital, Tripoli, Al-Menfi congratulated Nouh on gaining the confidence of his colleagues. He emphasized the importance of the next phase, which requires a high level of constitutional awareness and a unified national will to emerge from the political impasse and constitutional vacuum currently affecting the country.

According to Libyan News Agency, the meeting addressed developments in the constitutional process, emphasizing that the draft constitution, completed on July 29, 2017, is the only complete constitutional document, both legally and procedurally, resulting from the collective will of the elected Constituent Assembly. It is not permissible to circumvent it or replace it with any alternatives without recourse to the popular will through a direct referendum.

The two parties stressed the need to reactivate the constitutional process as a fundamental entry point for any sustainable political settlement, emphasizing that bypassing or circumventing this process constitutes a violation of the rights of Libyans.
