Tripoli: The Head of the Presidential Council, Mohammed Al-Menfi, engaged in discussions today with Amy Pope, the Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), to address issues and files related to irregular migration. This meeting, held at the Presidential Council headquarters in Tripoli, also delved into the organized criminal activities and the security and humanitarian challenges that arise at both regional and international levels.
According to Libyan News Agency, the meeting was attended by Othman Belbeisi, the Regional Director of the IOM for the Middle East and North Africa, and Nicoletta Giordano, the IOM Country Director for Libya. The discussions focused on enhancing cooperation in migration management, fighting human trafficking networks, and reducing the flow of irregular migration. Al-Menfi highlighted Libya's role as a transit country and called for international collaboration to address the root causes of irregular migration and stabilize countries of origin, which could help mitigate the phenomenon.
Furthermore, Al-Menfi reiterated Libya's commitment to working with the IOM in line with international human rights standards, ensuring the dignity of migrants is preserved. The IOM Country Director expressed the organization's readiness to continue providing technical and logistical support to Libya. The goal is to strengthen partnership programs aimed at managing migration humanely and safely while tackling the associated challenges effectively.
