Tripoli: The Head of the Presidential Council, Mohammed Al-Menfi, met with the United Kingdom's Ambassador to Libya, Martin Reynolds, to deliberate on the latest political, economic, and security developments in Libya, alongside international efforts aimed at progressing the political process towards a comprehensive consensus that would lead to elections.
According to Libyan News Agency, Al-Menfi stressed the importance of ensuring that any political initiative, including those from the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), is grounded in sound legal and constitutional principles. This is crucial to guarantee the integrity of the electoral process and to prevent any legal challenges or disputes that may arise from potential loopholes or overlaps in the drafting process, or from politicization.
The discussion also covered the unification of the military institution in Libya, highlighting the need for continuous efforts to establish a unified military body under civilian authority. Such a body would operate within established constitutional and legal boundaries. Additionally, the necessity of implementing a unified budget to bolster financial stability and ensure the equitable distribution of resources was a key point of the meeting.
The British ambassador reaffirmed the United Kingdom's support for the Presidential Council's endeavors to stabilize Libya. He emphasized the UK's commitment to supporting the political process and enhancing prospects for achieving a comprehensive and sustainable settlement.
