Rabat – The administration of the ‘Aïn Sebaa 1’ local prison has denied allegations published by certain websites, according to which the detainee (I.K) was subjected to ‘attempted physical liquidation by external parties of the establishment’ and ‘beatings under the gaze of officials’, in addition to ‘his deprivation of care’ and his ‘intention to start a hunger strike’.
In a clarification, the prison administration reported that on March 2, 2024, the inmate in question exchanged insults with another resident, before the situation degenerated into aggression with punches thrown at him by the latter, causing bruises to his neck and jaw.
As soon as it became aware of the incident, the prison administration took appropriate disciplinary action against the attacking inmate and provided the resident with the necessary care, the same source added.
It noted that on April 4, 2024, the prisoner exchanged blows with a fellow inmate after an argument over a landline telephone, following which the two inmates were pr
esented to the prison doctor and then transferred to other cells as a precautionary measure to prevent such an incident from recurring.
As for the allegation that the aforementioned inmate had considered going on hunger strike to protest against what he had allegedly been subjected to inside the establishment, the clarification stressed that this is ‘a false allegation’, in that the person concerned had never given written notice to the administration to go on hunger strike, and that he had been placed in an isolation cell at his written request.
