New york: Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, welcomed the political roadmap presented by the head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Hanna Tetteh, during her briefing to the Security Council. The roadmap aims to pave the way for the unification of Libyan institutions and the holding of presidential and legislative elections.
According to Libyan News Agency, Aboul Gheit affirmed his support for UN efforts aimed at ending the state of division and restoring stability in Libya, as stated by the Secretary-General’s spokesperson, Jamal Rushdi. Aboul Gheit highlighted that the proposed roadmap represents an opportunity that all parties must seize to reach a comprehensive political settlement in Libya.
He emphasized the importance of the UN mission continuing to coordinate with the Libyan parties and regional and international partners to ensure the necessary political and technical support for the implementation of the roadmap’s provisions. The spokesperson also stressed the importance of ensuring Libyan ownership and leadership of the political process.
The Arab League expressed its commitment to supporting and accompanying Libyans to bring views closer and resume dialogue. It reiterated its dedication to preserving Libya’s unity, independence, and sovereignty.
