Written question – VP/HR – EUNAVFOR MED (Sophia) – P-003180/2016

There are serious concerns that the number of people fleeing from Libya in an attempt to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe will continue to increase over the next weeks and months. During the recent meeting of the EU Foreign Ministers, it was stated that consideration will be given to any support requests that can be provided through Eunavfor MED (Sophia). The EU once again reaffirmed its full support to the UN Support Mission in Libya.

1. Have there been any contacts between the EU and the UN regarding the possibility of joining forces and seriously considering the possibility of enhancing the capacity of Eunavfor MED (Sophia) to disrupt human smugglers and trafficking networks?

2. Has the EU been approached by the legitimate Libyan authorities to help in capacity building and training for the Libyan Coastguard?

3. If no contact has been made by the Libyan authorities, how does the EU intend to address human smuggling and trafficking from Libya into the EU?
