Washington, The American Al Hurra TV channel quoted a US State Department spokesperson whose name it didn’t disclose as saying ‘the United States does not take position on the individual candidates’, in a comment on the declaration by Saif Gaddafi and Khalifa Haftar, that they were to run in the presidential elections in Libya.

“Libyans themselves will determine who should play a role in the future of the country’, the spokesperson said adding “We share many Libyans’ fears that a candidate implicated in crimes against humanity could become their president.”

We vey much believe that for the political transition to succeed, perpetrators of human rights violations must be held accountable, civic space is protected and the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association are guaranteed,” he added.

“The United States and the international community continue to support the momentum in Libya to hold elections that lead to a democratically elected government, that can meet the aspirations of the Libyan people, the spokesperson said, explaining that” the national elections on December 24 will be decisive to democratic progress and Libyan unity, by allowing people across the country to have a voice in shaping the future of Libya.”

He stressed that the political process must be owned by the Libyans, with Libyan leadership, and free from foreign interference or influence.
