New york: The United States has underscored the necessity of security integration between Libya’s eastern and western regions to bolster the nation’s role in ensuring regional stability and security. This emphasis was articulated in a statement by the US government following a meeting it chaired, which included senior officials from Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom. The meeting, held alongside the General Assembly sessions, aimed to discuss strategies for establishing a robust economic foundation for unity and security in Libya.

According to Libyan News Agency, the statement published by the US State Department highlighted the critical need for unifying political institutions in Libya. This unification is seen as essential for promoting prosperity among all Libyans and equipping the country to defend its sovereignty, secure its borders, and prevent its territory from becoming a conduit for security threats such as illegal migration and arms trafficking.

The US Presidency reiterated the international community’s strong commitment to aiding Libya on its journey toward enhanced unity, stability, and prosperity. It also acknowledged the briefing by Hanna Tetteh, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya, appreciating her significant efforts in backing the Libyan political process.

The statement indicated that Tetteh provided insights into the ongoing efforts to implement the political roadmap of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and to foster effective dialogue among various Libyan factions. The Presidency praised the participants’ backing for the amendment to the arms embargo set by the Security Council, which has facilitated initial measures such as joint training and technical assistance to boost security integration in Libya.

Furthermore, the Presidency underscored the importance of constructing a strong Libyan economy to achieve greater security, stability, and prosperity. It stressed the need for cooperation among all participants to fortify independent and professional national institutions, like the National Oil Corporation, the Central Bank of Libya, and the Financial Oversight Authority, enabling them to support economic stability and cultivate a stable business environment.

The participants concurred that coordinated international efforts to support economic stability, create investment opportunities, and safeguard Libya’s resources would aid in advancing unity and prosperity. The meeting also saw a positive reception of support for UNSMIL’s political roadmap and the UN Special Envoy’s efforts to build consensus among Libyan parties.

The participants engaged in discussions regarding their countries’ perspectives and strategies, as well as the interim steps they could collectively take to guide Libya towards a more stable and unified future.
