Tripoli: The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has underscored the critical importance of protecting freedom of opinion, while ensuring respect for laws and societal values. The mission reiterated that freedom of opinion and expression is fundamental to human rights and essential for the development of free and democratic societies.
According to Libyan News Agency, UNSMIL emphasized the necessity of distinguishing between legitimate freedom of expression and incitement to discrimination, hostility, or violence. Such incitement is prohibited under local laws, international legislation, societal norms, and established religious values. The mission clarified that combating hate speech is not about imposing restrictions on freedom of expression, but rather about preventing hate speech from becoming a tool that endangers individual safety and societal stability.
UNSMIL called on all parties to engage in constructive dialogue, promote a culture of tolerance, and collaborate in creating a media and
societal environment that both respects diversity and upholds human dignity.
