UNSMIL Encourages Voter Registration for 2025 Libyan Municipal Elections

Tripoli: The UN mission calls on all eligible persons to register for the municipal council elections. The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has urged “all eligible voters to register for the 2025 municipal council elections.”

According to Libyan News Agency, the mission announced on its Facebook page that “The High National Elections Commission has opened voter registration for the municipal elections in 62 municipalities. Don’t miss this opportunity to make a difference. Register today and be part of the change.”

It is noteworthy that on March 2, the Chairman of the Commission’s Board, Emad Al-Sayeh, welcomed the UN Special Envoy to Libya, Hannah Tetteh, and her delegation, along with Commission Board members Abdulhakim Al-Shaab and Abu Bakr Marda.

The visit was “part of the international community’s ongoing efforts to support the electoral process in Libya, marking the first visit since Tetteh assumed her duties.” The discussions covered “a range of important issues related to the electoral process in Libya, including the challenges facing organizing elections under the current circumstances. Particular emphasis was placed on the ongoing preparations for the second round of municipal council elections in 2025, which includes several municipalities across Libya.”

The discussions also highlighted “the role played by the United Nations in providing technical and advisory support to the Commission, including assistance in managing electoral processes, training staff, and ensuring a safe electoral environment that encourages the participation of all groups, including women, youth, and persons with disabilities.”
