Tripoli-UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is said to be following developments in Libya on an ongoing basis, including a session of the House of Representatives expected to perform a vote of confidence for a new government.

The remarks came in a statement attributed to Stéphane Dujarric, the spokesman for the Secretary-General.

According to Dujarric, Guterres expressed concern over reports that the vote in the House of Representatives falls short of expected standards of transparency and procedures, with threats occurring before the hearing.

According to the statement, the Secretary-General reiterated the importance of maintaining the unity and stability that has been achieved since the signing of the ceasefire agreement in October 2020, and the need to achieve the aspirations of more than 2.8 million Libyans who registered to vote to choose their leaders through credible, transparent and comprehensive elections based on a sound constitutional and legal framework.

The Secretary-General called on all actors to refrain from taking any actions that would undermine stability and deepen divisions in Libya.

The statement revealed the Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Libya Stephanie Williams intends to invite a joint committee of the House of Representatives and the Supreme Council of State as soon as possible to meet to establish a consensual constitutional basis that would lead to national elections as soon as possible.
