Tripoli: The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has expressed its support for efforts aimed at addressing the issue of arbitrary detention in the country. The Mission emphasized the importance of respecting the human rights of detainees and ensuring that all detention centers are under full civilian oversight.
According to Libyan News Agency, in a recent statement, UNSMIL commended the establishment of the National Interim Committee for Monitoring the Conditions of Prisoners and Prisons in Benghazi. This committee, formed on December 23, marks a significant step towards improving the conditions and oversight of detention centers in Libya.
The Mission also expressed optimism about the potential impact of this initiative, alongside the efforts of the Human Rights Committee for Monitoring the Conditions of Prisons and Detention Centers, which was established in Tripoli on June 4, 2025. Additionally, the ongoing efforts of the Attorney General are seen as crucial to effectively addressing arbitrary detention, enhancing conditions in detention facilities, and reinforcing human rights and the rule of law across the nation.
