UN Extends UNSMIL Mandate to Support Inclusive Libyan Political Process

Tripoli:Tetteh encourages all political actors to assume the responsibility of responding to the expectations of Libyans.

According to Libyan News Agency, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Libya, Hanna Tetteh, affirmed that the UNSMIL will continue to support a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned inclusive political process. This process is set to consult with all key stakeholders across the Libyan political spectrum.

This announcement came following the UN Security Council's decision to extend UNSMIL's mandate for an additional year, until 31 October 2027, as stated in a tweet by UNSMIL. Tetteh expressed appreciation for the continued support from the UN Security Council and international partners, while also acknowledging concerns about the political stalemate and the progress of the UN-facilitated political process.

Tetteh emphasized the Mission's commitment to adapting efforts and developing formats for convening and discussion to achieve unified institutions through inclusive participation. The goal is to ensure lasting stability and elections that restore the Libyan people's right to choose their leaders. She reiterated the importance of leadership, compromise, and urgency in delivering concrete action and progress to improve the lives of Libyans.
