Tripoli: The Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Libya, Ulrika Richardson, emphasized that strengthening food safety is not only crucial for protecting public health but also plays a vital role in ensuring economic and social stability.
According to Libyan News Agency, Richardson made these remarks during a roundtable organized by the Office of the Attorney General focused on food security and environmental rights. The event saw participation from representatives of the Attorney General's Office, the Minister of Environment, and the Minister of Economy. Richardson praised the initiative, highlighting its significance in ongoing efforts to bolster the rule of law, combat corruption and organized crime, and guarantee the right to a healthy environment and food produced under approved health standards.
Richardson urged responsible pesticide management, improved institutional coordination, and practical support for farmers to adopt safer agricultural practices. She reiterated the United Nations' commitment to aiding Libya in developing secure, resilient, and sustainable food systems.
The workshop featured presentations by national experts and United Nations agencies, such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Topics included the impact of pesticide residues on health and the environment, management of hazardous pesticides, food traceability, safety monitoring systems, and solutions to promote sustainable agriculture.
Participants also deliberated on the role of national institutions in enhancing regulatory frameworks, oversight, law enforcement, and consumer protection.
