UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office: Alternative mechanisms will be used unless the representatives and the HCS agree on the constitutional basis in Libya

Tripoli -British Foreign Office congratulated Libya on the occasion of its Independence Day, indicating with concern that one year has passed since the postponement of the scheduled elections in Libya on 24 December 2021.

In a statement published by its embassy in Libya on its SMS Page, the Office said ”holding of free, fair, transparent, and inclusive presidential, parliamentary elections as soon as possible across the country, represents the clear will and aspiration of the Libyan people”.

It stressed that Libyan people deserve to have a unified and democratically-elected government, that can govern for the good of the country and its all people, as well as a legislature with a renewed mandate.

The Office called on its statement all Libyan actors and political parties to cooperate with UN Special Representative of Secretary-General ,Bathily, through compromise and constructive engagement, to fulfill their responsibilities to the Libyan people on the political, security, economic and human rights tracks, to achieve long-term stability, security and prosperity.

The Office expressed the UK’s readiness to work with all parties in support of these aims, reiterating support for Bathily’s efforts in achieving these aims.

It’s called on all actors , including the speaker of the House of Representatives and the president of the High State Council, to come together under UN auspices to agree swiftly on the constitutional basis, that pave the way to holding the elections in the country.

The statement said that if the two councils cannot reach an agreement swiftly on a credible electoral roadmap to hold the elections, alternative mechanisms can, and should be used to alleviate the sufferings caused by outdated and open ended interim political arrangements.

The Office also called on all parties to accelerate the full implementation of the 23 October 2020 ceasefire agreement in order to preserve Libya’s stability and unity and fully support the 5+5 Joint Military Commission in that regard.
