Tripoli, urged U.S. Special Envoy and U.S. Ambassador to Libya Richard Norland urged, in a statement, for calm and steps that could help relax the tense security situation in Tripoli or elsewhere in Libya.

“Now is not the time to take unilateral action or armed deployments that risk escalation and unintended consequences that harm the security and safety of Libyans,” Norland said in a statement posted on the embassy’s SMS page.

We again call on the United Nations Support Mission in Libya to resolve the differences that arise on political or military issues without resorting to violence. “At the same time, working towards elections must be a priority, in line with the strong wishes of all Libyans.

Libyan leaders, on behalf of the Libyan people, must urgently address all legal and political obstacles to holding elections, including finalizing the lists of presidential candidates. The United States shares the concern and disappointment of the vast majority of Libyans who are waiting to have the opportunity to vote for the future of their country.

Norland concluded by calling on Libyans to be vigilant and alert to misinformation and false news: “At this delicate moment in Libya’s path forward, it is more important than ever for Libyans to be vigilant about the spread of misinformation that benefits only those who wish to disrupt Libya’s future progress, he said.
