Tripoli, The United Nations announced today, Monday, that it is pressing for elections in Libya by next June, in line with the roadmap in 2020.

The Special Adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations on Libya, Stephanie Williams, said in a press statement on the sidelines of her visit to Cairo, that it is still “reasonable and highly probable that 2.8 million voters in Libya will cast their ballots by June to elect the first president since the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011.” In line with the 2020 roadmap.

Williams added that the elections are necessary to give credibility to the country’s institutions, stressing that “all institutions suffer from a crisis of legitimacy,” and that she does not see any other way out for Libya other than a peaceful political process.
