Cairo- Representatives of the House of Representatives and the Supreme Council of State began meetings in Cairo today, Wednesday, to lay down a consensual constitutional basis that leads to national elections.

The meetings extend to April 20, with the participation of the Adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Stephanie Williams.

Parliament spokesman, Abdullah Blihaq, said that the meetings are held in accordance with the decision of the House of Representatives to review the points and articles in dispute in the draft constitution.

Blihaq explained, “The committee of the House of Representatives was formed based on the twelfth constitutional amendment approved by the House last February, which amends the controversial articles in the draft constitution submitted by the Constituent Assembly for the Drafting of the Constitution.”

He added that “the House of Representatives committee is authorized, according to its founding decision, to make the necessary amendments in the draft constitution only,” noting that “the decision to establish the committee provides for referring anything contrary to that to the House of Representatives for a decision, and therefore the committee has no right but to discuss the issue of controversial points in the Constitution”.
