Libya and EU to Strengthen Security Cooperation and Combat Illegal Immigration.

Tripoli: The Minister of Interior in charge, Acting Minister Major General Imad Al-Trabelsi, engaged in discussions with the European Union Ambassador to Libya, Nicola Orlando, focusing on joint security issues and strategies to tackle illegal immigration and its impact on Libya, its neighboring countries, and the Mediterranean region. The meeting, held at the Ministry’s headquarters in Tripoli, emphasized enhancing security cooperation between Libya and the European Union, as well as coordinating joint programs to bolster stability within the country.

According to Libyan News Agency, the Ministry of Interior shared on its official Facebook page that the discussions also centered on confronting organized crime and terrorism, alongside a range of shared security concerns. Ambassador Orlando, via his account on the “X” website, described the meeting as fruitful and reiterated the European Union’s commitment to maintaining a strong partnership with Libya, emphasizing respect for universal human rights, humanita
rian principles, and Libyan sovereignty and culture.

Orlando highlighted that the meeting reviewed progress since the Trans-Mediterranean Migration Forum convened last July. “We have seen a staggering 87% year-on-year increase in voluntary returns of migrants as a result of EU-supported reforms and strong cooperation between the two sides,” he stated, also noting an agreement with Trabelsi to further strengthen land border management.
