Tripoli, Member of Presidency Council Musa Al Koni was phoned by US Assistant Secretary of State for Middle Eastern Affairs Joey Hood on Friday.

The phone contact focused on ‘special Libyan-American relations’, and clarifying the US position vis a vis the situation in Libya particularly in regard to issues such as security, stability, elections, unifying the military and national reconciliation.

Hood reassured Al Koni of US backing for the Presidency Council effort to achieve stability, national reconciliation, unifying the military and holding elections on Dec. 24 as a final date in spite of all obstacles, so the people can choose their rulers.

Al Koni expressed his thanks for the US position supporting Libya’s return to the international community as a stable, democratic and active player, that can contribute to world peace in the region, and internationally and in combating terrorism in its regional location and globally.

The phone talks between Al Koni and Hood come one day after US State Department warned against threats posed to regional stability and international trade by what it termed as foreign powers which exploit the conflict in Libya.

The State Department, according to Blomberg Agency, mentioned Russia by name, expressing concern over its destabilizing influence, and said that the Libyan people must choose their leaders.

The Libyan presidential elections this year should supposedly serve to be a sign return of the of the North African oil-rich country to stability after years of civil war, Blomberg said, indicating that the electoral competition was treading on a fine line of restoration of stability or re-unleashing of violence.
