Tripoli: The European Union Delegation and diplomatic missions of EU Member States to Libya have expressed their support for the new political roadmap announced by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya, Hanna Tetteh, before the UN Security Council on August 21: The European missions praised the comprehensive plan presented by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), highlighting its basis in extensive consultations with various Libyan groups and its practical framework for achieving peace and stability.
According to Libyan News Agency, the statement from the EU Delegation emphasized that the roadmap’s three pillars-developing a legal and constitutional framework for elections, unifying institutions through a new government, and initiating a national dialogue-offer a clear path out of the political stalemate. The European missions urged Libyan parties to promptly implement preliminary steps, including restructuring the High National Elections Commission and amending legal frameworks. They expressed support for a national dialogue centering on the Libyan people and affirmed readiness to assist the plan’s success, including holding obstructive parties accountable.
The statement also condemned a rocket attack near the UNSMIL headquarters during the Special Representative’s briefing, labeling it an “unacceptable act of terror.” It praised the Libyan authorities’ swift response and reiterated the EU’s support for UNSMIL and commitment to Libya’s peace process.
The EU Delegation and diplomatic missions concluded by reaffirming their commitment to Libya’s stability, unity, and sovereignty, anticipating the roadmap’s effective implementation to achieve lasting peace and democratic governance in the country.
