European Union Reaffirms Support for UN’s Political Efforts in Libya

Tripoli: The European Union has reiterated its full support for the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) in its efforts to advance the political process in the country. This affirmation came during a meeting between the European Union Ambassador to Libya, Nicola Orlando, and Hanna Tetteh, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya.

According to Libyan News Agency, Ambassador Orlando, in a tweet posted on Wednesday via his official account on X, detailed his discussions with Tetteh regarding the latest developments in the political process in Libya. They explored the next steps in the UN-facilitated political process and exchanged views on engaging with Libyan and international partners. They also discussed ways to enhance the European Union’s support for UNSMIL, especially given the sensitive phase Libya is currently experiencing.

The European Ambassador noted the “renewed sense of urgency” reflected in the mission’s consultations and affirmed the European Union’s commitment t
o aiding UN efforts for peace and stability in Libya. Additionally, Orlando emphasized the importance of constructive engagement from all Libyan parties with the UN mission’s efforts, cautioning against unilateral initiatives that could negatively impact the political process.

Orlando stated, “We agreed on the need to make every possible effort to maintain the ceasefire and prevent a relapse into violence,” highlighting the European Union’s steadfast dedication to supporting accountability in addressing threats to Libya’s security and stability.
